General Managers Update
September '25

Ann Marie Bowyer, General Manager

As we step into autumn, I want to take a moment to thank you all for your continued dedication and hard work.

This month we had the pleasure of celebrating 15 years of Bluebird Care in York—a fantastic milestone that reflects the commitment, compassion, and teamwork shown over the years. Achievements like this remind us not only how far we’ve come, but also the lasting impact we’ve made in our communities by delivering care with heart.

I’d also like to congratulate those who have completed their probation and training, and to highlight the wonderful feedback we’ve received from customers. Stories such as Tiegan and Niamh supporting Steven on his Mam’s wedding day capture the very essence of what we do—going above and beyond to create moments that truly matter.

As the colder months approach, our focus remains on supporting the wellbeing of both our customers and our teams. Please also remember that we operate with an open-door policy—your ideas and feedback are always welcome and play a vital role in helping us improve and grow together.

Thank you for everything you do each day to deliver outstanding care and for the difference you continue to make in people’s lives.

Staff Appreciation

A huge congratulations to everyone who has successfully passed their probation or received their Care Certificate! We are incredibly proud of your progress and the dedication you’ve shown in your roles as care assistants. Please see the images below celebrating your achievements!

Thank you to Siobhan!

A big thank you to Siobhan for her ongoing dedication and support! Recently, she assisted David when he experienced a worrying scam attempt. Thanks to her guidance, David was able to contact his bank quickly and confirm that no money had been taken.

David expressed his gratitude, saying, “Please pass on my thanks to Siobhan for all her help and support.” We’re proud of how our team goes above and beyond to keep our customers safe and reassured. Siobhan will also be joining the team for a lunch at Walkers, a well-deserved celebration of her care and dedication.

Thank you to Jackie and Tiegan!

A massive thank you to Jackie Pitchford, who received amazing feedback from both a customer and colleague for continuing to go above and beyond.

Also, to Tiegan, who got amazing feedback from JM for being kind, considerate, empathetic, and being a really good listener.

Thank you Chantelle, Lacey and Melissa

A family member sent a card to thank carers for their kindness, after being moved to another care provider through a funded care package.

Thank you Mia

Mia received a compliment from Annette E stating “ she is like a breath of fresh air, smiling as she came through the door.  She talked me into getting up and having a shower, which has made me feel much better.  She is so smiley, and I am so glad she is back looking after me!”

Well done to Daisy, for passing probation!

Is Creatine Good For Elderly People?

The answer is yes, creatine is good for older people. It is an excellent supplement to take when taken appropriately, especially for older adults. With support for muscle maintenance and bone health, it’s a good thing to consider if you struggle with mobility or falls.

What is creatine?

Creatine is a chemical which is produced in the body and it is primarily found in the muscles and brain. While most people get low amounts of creatine by eating seafood and red meat, larger amounts are found in synthetic creatine supplements.  It can also be referred to as creatine monohydrate. Your pancreas and kidneys make around 1 gram of creatine each day. Creatine is one of your body’s natural energy sources.

Synthetic creatine supplements are a safe and well-researched supplement that enhances energy in your muscles and supports recovery, as well as brain health. Taken daily, (3-5g per day), it is most effective when taken continuously with routine.

It can come in either a tablet or a powdered supplement. When using a powder supplement, it can be added to water, juice or any liquid. However, it would help to purchase a shaker bottle for your creatine to avoid a lumpy texture.

Health and Wellbeing

Prioritising Health and Wellbeing as We Transition into the Colder Months

As we move from the vibrant days of summer into the chill of autumn and winter, it’s important to recognise the impact seasonal changes can have on both our physical health and emotional wellbeing. Shorter days, colder weather, and reduced daylight hours can all influence our energy levels, mood, and immune system. With a few small adjustments, however, we can protect our health and embrace this season positively.

1. Boost Your Immune System
The colder months often bring an increase in colds and flu. Supporting your immune health through a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals is key. Seasonal produce such as carrots, parsnips, and leafy greens provide vital nutrients, while vitamin D supplements may also help counteract the lack of sunlight.

2. Stay Active Indoors and Out
While it can be tempting to stay indoors, regular movement is essential for circulation, mobility, and mental health. Short daily walks, gentle stretching, or light indoor exercises can all help maintain strength and resilience. Even 10–15 minutes of activity each day can make a difference.

3. Prioritise Mental Wellbeing
The darker days can sometimes affect mood, leading to feelings of low energy or seasonal blues. Creating time for activities that lift your spirits, listening to music, connecting with friends, or practicing mindfulness can help maintain a positive outlook. If possible, spending time outdoors in natural daylight can also support mental wellbeing.

4. Keep Warm and Safe
Cold weather can increase the risk of illness and falls, particularly for older adults. Dressing in layers, using blankets, and ensuring heating systems are working efficiently helps create a safe and comfortable environment. It’s also wise to keep pathways clear and wear sturdy footwear when outside to prevent slips.

5. Maintain Good Sleep Habits
Quality rest is essential for overall health, especially during the winter when our bodies work harder to fight off seasonal bugs. Establishing a regular bedtime routine, reducing screen time before bed, and creating a warm, calm sleep environment can all improve rest.

6. Stay Connected
The colder months can sometimes lead to isolation, so keeping in touch with family, friends, or neighbours is important for emotional wellbeing. Whether it’s a phone call, a shared meal, or a quick chat on a walk, social connections provide comfort and support during the darker months.

By focusing on these simple health and wellbeing practices, we can all make the seasonal transition smoother. Winter doesn’t have to be a time of decline, it can be an opportunity to nurture ourselves, strengthen resilience, and find joy in small comforts.

Looking Ahead

Scam Alert – Protecting Yourself from Fraud

Following from Siobhan’s staff appreciation, we want to shed light on scammers and targeting the elderly.

We want to remind our customers and their families that scammers often target older adults, sometimes by phone or online. Recent examples include attempts to make purchases or book trips without consent.

Here are some key safety tips:

  • Never share bank or card details with unknown callers.

  • Verify unexpected requests by contacting your bank or trusted family members.

  • Report suspicious activity immediately to your bank and the authorities.

Being vigilant and seeking support early, like David did, can prevent financial loss and stress.

Can you support us on social media?

You might be surprised at just how far a simple like, comment, or share can go! We put a lot of effort into creating meaningful and engaging content, but we’d love to see more interaction from our own community.

If you spot something we’ve posted, please take a moment to like, comment, or share, it really does make a huge difference. Our campaigns are an important way of reaching new customers, and with your support, they can be even more effective. Thank you for helping us spread the word!

Video Projects

We’re already planning the next round of video projects, and we’d love more people to get involved — whether that’s sharing your story, supporting behind the scenes, or helping us shape future ideas.

If you’re interested, please contact erinkilford@bluebirdcare.co.uk

Community Engagement – Get Involved

As we continue to grow our presence and impact, we’re looking to involve more of our care staff in community-based initiatives, including local Dementia Cafés, support groups, and public awareness events.

These activities not only help raise awareness and support those living with dementia and other conditions, but they also help us build our brand, strengthen community ties, and showcase the amazing work our care teams do every day.

If you’re passionate about making a difference beyond day-to-day care, this is a great opportunity to get involved. Whether it’s attending an event, helping organise something locally, or simply representing Bluebird Care in your community — we’d love to hear from you.

To register your interest or find out more, please email: joemckenzie@bluebirdcare.co.uk

Thank you for reading — and thank you for the care, compassion, and commitment you show every day.

See you in the next edition!
